At Hair Above Salon, we pride ourselves on top-quality service, punctuality and client experience; we respect that your time is precious and work diligently to style, color and cut your hair and then get you back on your way.

We start your appointment on time and won’t keep you longer than necessary!

Additionally, we will never begin your appointment until we know exactly what you want – we listen and work with you to fully understand your needs.

Our clients come from Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Oyster Bay, the Brookvilles, Muttontown and Glen Head; however, we have so many multi-generational clients – including some fourth generation clients – that we draw from Manhattan and people traveling from all over who come back to visit family. We never lose touch with our clients, because they are family, and frequently our clients from afar will plan their hair appointment around their next visit home to Long Island so that they can come to Hair Above Salon.

History

Beginning 35 years ago in 1980, we operated on the second floor of a small building on Forest Avenue, thus giving us our name: Hair Above Salon. As a team of talented hair stylists, we worked into the night, which gave our salon an NYC look and feel as passersby looked up into our windows as watched as we cut and styled. It was an exciting time, but not everyone was happy about our newfound success! Parking became increasingly difficult and we were bursting at the seams after only a couple of years. We set about looking for a new home and in 1984 we moved into our current location at 1 School Street and never looked back. Most people are shocked as they enter the modest Hair Above entrance when they discover a beautiful and spacious two-story salon with vaulted ceilings and incredible lighting. (Oh, and we overcame the parking issue as well since there is a free, multi-story municipal parking garage adjacent to our building!) Today, even after tens of thousands of customers passing through our doors over the years, Hair Above Salon looks as beautiful as it did the first day we moved in.

The Hair Above Difference

Many of our clients come to us with coloring or styling gone wrong, so we do not recommend coloring or re-styling at home. It is much easier to come to us directly for your hair needs. With that said, we do specialize in corrective hair coloring; if you’re unhappy with your color job or if your previous color has grown out or faded, we can correct it to bring back the fresh look and color-pop you want and deserve.

Deborah Sommers, co-owner of the salon, has led an extraordinary career, traveling all over the world, including well-known style meccas such as London, Rome and Los Angeles, styling hair and participating in hair styling conventions. Additionally, Deborah was honored with the “Master of the Craft” award by the Art and Fashion Guild of Hair Professionals in New York and takes an active role in mentoring and guiding all of the hair professionals at Hair Above Salon.
